Peterson’s L7 Bar Limousin is a family owned Limousin operation originating in 1970. Located near Pukwana the Peterson family manages 4,000 acres. Learning from their experiences feeding cattle, the Petersons chose the Limousin breed for the added dressing % and Yield Grade. The cow herd is based on a closed-herd principle.

For 26 years on the second or third weekend of April is the Peterson’s annual bull sale offering about 50 bulls and 20 heifers.

The Petersons stalking rate is about 400 cows, but with the drought situation the last few years, their numbers are down to 275. Of that 275, 100 are commercial. This year they’re looking at increasing their numbers to 350 head.

The Peterson operation is AI intensive. They utilize the HeatWatch® system which interacts with computers to report heat in cows. They have experimented with synchronization, but rely strictly on heat and breed methods. The HeatWatch system has increased the number of heats reported, as well as cutting down on labor associated with heat detecting.

The National Western Stock Show is an important promotional event for the Peterson’s. The L7 Bar crew has exhibited the cattle “In the Yards” for 29 consecutive years starting in 1976. In 1998, six reserve champion pens and 23 years later, they captured the Grand Champion and People’s Choice Champion Pen of Three.

L7 ‘n Seven, the lead bull in the 1998 Pen of Three has proven to be a breed-leading performance and carcass sire. Now deceased, “Seven” ranks in the top 1% of the breed for yearling weight and carcass weight, and ranks in the top 10% of the breed for ribeye area and marbling.
